WHO GAVE ME PERMISSION?

A Short Film By Cool Murphy

Why I Made This

I wrote this song after realizing nobody was coming to hand me the life I wanted.

I just had to arrive.

For a long time, I thought permission was something that came from somewhere else. A relationship. A career milestone. A certain amount of money. A city finally choosing me back. Some invisible committee deciding I was now allowed to take up space the way I actually wanted to.

Turns out, nobody was coming.

So I moved to New Orleans. And slowly, over time, I started building a life that fit me instead of trying to fit myself into a life that didn’t.

This film started as a listing video and became something much more personal somewhere along the way. The house became less of a subject and more of a backdrop for all the small moments that make a life feel like your own: watering plants barefoot, eating pizza on the couch with the dog, getting ready with friends upstairs, hosting crawfish boils, singing karaoke badly, staying in all weekend because you can, going out because you want to.

Not performing a life. Actually living one.

That’s what this house became for me while creating this.

And maybe that’s what home is supposed to do.

For anyone who ever found permission to be themselves in New Orleans.
