CHAPTER V

Life at City Park

Just Beyond the Veranda

There's something rather magical about living across from City Park. Not near it. Not a few blocks away.

Across the street.

And this is no ordinary park. At 1,300 acres, New Orleans City Park is more than 50 percent larger than New York's Central Park. Its history even includes an early proposal by two engineers from Frederick Law Olmsted's firm, both of whom had worked on Central Park and Brooklyn's Prospect Park. Their 1872 plan was never implemented, but the ambition was unmistakable.

And the park that grew here became something extraordinary. Beneath one of the world's largest collections of mature live oaks, Spanish moss hangs in great silvery curtains. Waterfowl paddle through the lagoons. A gondola glides across the water. Children discover the playground while someone else discovers there's still powdered sugar on their shirt.

That's because one of Roxy's nearest neighbors, just across City Park Avenue, is Café Du Monde. Imagine having beignets practically at your doorstep.

And that's only the beginning.

Step Out Your Front Door &
There's More to See

There are the New Orleans Museum of Art and its magnificent sculpture garden, the Botanical Garden, the Louisiana Children's Museum, Carousel Gardens, golf courses, tennis courts, and miles of paths beneath the trees.

Come the holidays, Celebration in the Oaks transforms the park into a landscape of twinkling lights. It is part garden, part playground, part cultural institution, and part New Orleans tradition. And Roxy has box seats.

From the great veranda, you can watch the world come home along City Park Avenue. From the private primary suite sunroom, the oaks seem close enough to touch. At dusk, squirrels travel along branches at eye level, birds settle into their nests, and the Spanish moss stirs in the evening breeze.

You might be across the street and into the park before your partner has finished tying their running shoes.

Or wander down oak-lined Allard Boulevard, a lesser-known stretch with the stately character of St. Charles Avenue or Carrollton, but a personality entirely its own.

And when it's time to eat, drink, or gather with friends, there's no shortage of good company nearby.

Just down the avenue, Ralph's on the Park serves modern Louisiana cooking, leisurely brunches, and cocktails overlooking the oaks. Its building began welcoming parkgoers in 1860, decades before Roxy arrived.

Along Carrollton Avenue, Toups' Meatery offers Chef Isaac Toups' unapologetically Cajun cooking, from house-made charcuterie and boudin to the celebrated Meatery Board. Blue Oak BBQ supplies the smoked meats, while The Bulldog offers craft beer, pub food, and a dog-friendly patio.

Some evenings call for a proper dinner. Others call for a beer and absolutely no plans. Here, there's room for both. And there's room for life to change.

Schools, activities, friendships, traditions. A quick trip to the shops, a day at the Fair Grounds, an afternoon on the bayou. Whatever your household needs, there are possibilities in nearly every direction. After all, Roxy has welcomed a bachelor, multiple generations, and once a family of eleven children. She's already demonstrated that there is no single way to fill her rooms.

This is a home for someone with an appetite for living. Someone who will use the park, explore the neighborhood, welcome friends, and find new purposes for all that wonderful space.

And when the day is done?

Come home, settle onto the veranda, and watch the last light catch the moss hanging from the oaks.

The park is still there. Just across the street. And you have the best seats in the house.
