What Finally Motivates Someone to Buy a Home?

What if the answer was a little white rescue dog?

Meet Blueberry, Butkus, & Their Journey to Find the Right Home. Years ago, I met Veronica and Matt at one of the very first Cool Murphy Photos with Santa events benefiting Take Paws Rescue. They came with Butkus. Since then, they've welcomed another Take Paws rescue, Blueberry, into the family, and Veronica has become a volunteer with the organization.

They've talked about moving for years.

Not because they were unhappy where they lived. They simply wondered whether there might be something that fit them better. We looked at historic homes throughout the Irish Channel, the Lower Garden District, the Marigny, and Bywater. They loved the architecture, but every option seemed to ask them to compromise something that mattered. A larger budget meant a payment that didn't feel comfortable. A different neighborhood meant being farther from friends. A major renovation didn't make much sense with Matt traveling frequently for work.

Then life answered the question for them.

Blueberry came into their lives carrying anxiety from whatever life looked like before she was adopted. Living in a building with shared hallways and an elevator wasn't the right fit for her. It wasn't anyone's fault. It simply became clear that a different kind of home could make everyday life easier for everyone.

That realization shifted the search.

I think a lot of us grow up believing our first home should also be our forever home. It's an easy expectation to carry, but it can make every decision feel heavier than it needs to. Every compromise starts to feel permanent.

When Veronica and Matt became open to a different way of thinking, they stopped searching for the house that had to do everything forever and started looking for the home that would improve their lives now while helping them build toward whatever came next.

That's when they found this beautiful condo on Constance Street.

It had the neighborhood they loved, the character they were hoping for, and the kind of simplicity that fit this season of life.

The transaction itself wasn't effortless. Like many good transactions, there were inspections, negotiations, questions, and moments where everyone had to slow down, gather better information, and work through the details together. In the end, everyone did exactly that.

This week, Butkus and Blueberry spent their first night in their forever home.

Will it be theirs forever?

Yes, possibly.

Will it be Matt and Veronica's?

Probably not.

And that's okay.

They plan to own this home for a long, long time. They can already see it becoming a wonderful rental one day. But living there forever is a different question.

I think a lot of us confuse those two ideas.

A home doesn't have to be the place you spend the rest of your life to be one of the best decisions you ever make.

Sometimes it's the home that gives you stability, builds equity, keeps you close to the people you love, and creates the opportunity to choose your next chapter from a position of strength.

Forever isn't something you buy.

It's something you build.
